Work about depth is built on depth — on years of conversations, mentorships, failures and hard-won clarity that accumulate long before a word is written.

To the mentors who said the uncomfortable true thing rather than the comfortable approximate one: this project does not exist without you. You modelled what depth looks like not as a concept but as a daily standard of engagement, and the argument here is largely an attempt to describe what you were already doing.

To the audiences and students who pushed back on early versions of these ideas, asked the harder question, and refused the tidy answer: every difficult question from a thoughtful person is a gift. You made this sharper and more honest than it would otherwise have been.

To the researchers whose work is cited throughout — and who did the slow, unglamorous, genuinely difficult work of measuring something the rest of us could only assert: this argument is yours more than anyone's. Any errors in its use are not.

And to everyone reading who has chosen, somewhere in their working life, to sit with the hard problem instead of reaching for the shortcut: you are the counter-movement. Keep going.
